Allot of people hear us say that we want to live out our lives without the need to HAVE to work all the time and they think were crazy. To live without working and survive.........impossible!!! You would have to be on the well fare system in order for that to work they tell us. Well i disagree. The following are our goals and how we plan to reach our dream.
1: Grow a garden and learn to can and preserve. By growing everything we need as far as produce and then canning in for the winter we would be supplied with tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, broccoli, pumpkins, carrots and every other vegetable we can plant.
2: Plant fruit trees and bushes. We would be growing our own apples, pears, plums, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, black berries, and blue berries, they would also be collected and preserved to use through the winter.
3: Raise chickens for eggs/meat. By raising chickens we would no longer possess the need to buy eggs, or chicken meat. We would also possess a rooster to breed them so we would not need to buy a new brood of baby chickens every year. As far as eggs go chickens tend to stop laying in the winter due to to the lack of day light, Ive found a couple ways around this, 1) place a light in the hen house set to a timer to ensure the chickens still receive at least 12 to 14 hours of what they believe is day light (or at least they're bodies do) 2) You can freeze your eggs. By removing them from the shell they are freezable therefore can be stored through the winter.
4: Raise a goat for milk and dairy needs. This is a personal preference because some people don't like goats milk, I've had it and don't mind it at all. A goat is smaller then a cow and therefore easier to fit in to our goal and from it we can get milk, butter, cream, cheese, ice cream, and so on. You can also make soap from goats milk.
5: Have one or more bee hives. One bee hive would be more then enough for our family and we use allot of honey. We would also be able to use the beeswax to make candles and soaps.
6: Pay off all our debts. This one is by far the more difficult step but also should be the first step completed in my opinion to make things work right. In order to not have to work all the time we must not have bills piled up that need to be payed.
These are only "some" of the steps we plan to take to our self sufficient life but they're enough to get anyone started i believe.
