A Sad Day.....
One of our chickens had been acting very strange this week, her feathers were all fluffed up (almost like a mating dance you see with wild birds) and she was rarely leaving her nesting box. At first i thought maybe she was sitting, trying to hatch her eggs since every time we went to collect eggs she was in there so we couldn't get to her box. Then a friend came over and informed us that she could be egg bound. Seeing as we've only had chickens for a short time and i still know very little about them i went ahead and took her to a vet. Sure enough they gave her an x-ray and found that she was egg bound. Unfortunately the egg was shattered inside her. The vet informed us there wasn't much we could do. An infection would form and our hen would soon die. Out of our 6 hens this would be our first real loss. I was surprised at how upset i was over it. Just goes to show i guess that chickens can be family too.
